It's difficult to estimate the distance and speed from a ship to its allotted place. But with a long range measurement laser the distance and speed from quay to the ship can be measured. The LAM 301 is mounted in a sturdy zone 1 housing. Measurements are displayed on a large display, so this information can be used with the berthing. This extra information makes the berthing easier, therefore reducing the chance of accidents.
A helipad on a ship or drilling platform is lit with floodlights to make the helipad visible for the pilot. When the pilot lands, the lights may dim or go off. This is what the LAM sensors are for, to detect, within a set distance window, the presence of the helicopter. Because the laser measures a distance, this sensor detects, contrary to other sensors, also stationary objects and functions trustworthy under heavy weather circumstances.
